The conference "Relevant Issues of Ecology and Environmental Management" is one of the first environmental conferences in Russia. It was first held in 1999 at the Ecology Department of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (now the Institute of Environmental Ingineering), which had been established only 4 years earlier and was the first department in Russia to introduce systematic environmental education.
Following the conference, a collection of abstracts was published and it was decided to hold the conference annually (the only exception for a number of reasons was 2016, when the conference did not take place).
The status of international conference was obtained in 2012.
The areas of work of the conference cover a wide range of issues of environmental protection and management and related issues - monitoring of the state of environmental components by various methods, analysis of the impact of human activity on the environment, technologies to reduce this impact and reclamation of territories, human ecology, resource and food security, as well as social ecology, public policy in the field of environmental protection and environmental education and enlightenment. The conference is attended by scientists, teachers, postgraduates and trainees of Russian and foreign universities, as well as employees of research institutes and industrial enterprises.
The conference is traditionally held in April and is timed to coincide with Earth Day (22 April). As part of the "big" conference, an Ecological Conference of schoolchildren is also held, with selected articles on the reports published in the conference proceedings.
Since 2020 (when the COVID-19 pandemic covered almost the whole world), the conference has been held in a mixed face-to-face and distance format.
According to the feedback from the conference participants:
